Join a representative of the Randolph County Beekeepers Association for “Beekeeping Basics” at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 23, at the Asheboro Public Library.

Learn about how the insects pollinate backyard gardens, and get answers to questions about hosting a hive.

The talk is free and the public is invited. It is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Get ready for spring gardening with Ben Grandon at Asheboro library

ASHEBORO – North Carolina’s long growing season is almost here, and Ben Grandon of Randolph County Cooperative Extension will help you get ready in “Backyard Gardening,” 7 p.m. Tuesday, February 16, at the Asheboro Public Library.

The talk is free and the public is invited. It’s sponsored by Friends of the Library.

Grandon will provide an overview of supplies and equipment you will need, and answer gardening questions. He also will highlight services available through Cooperative Extension to ensure bountiful harvests of fruits and veggies.

‘Smoke eater’ Kelly Cagle to talk about fighting forest fires

ASHEBORO – Fighting wildfires and managing prescribed burns in the Uwharrie National Forest are the jobs U.S. Forestry Service District Fire Management Officer Kelly Cagle.

Cagle will discuss his experiences and adventures as a forest fire fighter at 7 p.m. Thursday, February 18, at the Asheboro Public Library. Hosted by the library’s TeenZone, the talk is free and the public is invited.

A Randolph County native and Southwestern Randolph High School graduate, Cagle got his start as an intern while studying forest management technology at Montgomery Community College, and was hired full time when he completed his degree.

For the first part of his career, he worked in outdoor public recreation. But since 1997, he has specialized in fire management in the Uwharries, extinguishing any unwanted fires and managing the annual prescribed burning of 5,000-6,000 acres per year.

Teens: learn to turn in Asheboro library’s ‘Pottery Slam!’

ASHEBORO – Get hands-on experience throwing pots and turning clay creations in the 5th Annual TeenZone Pottery Slam!, noon-2 p.m. Saturday, February 13, at the Asheboro Public Library.

All teens are invited to join local potters Brooke Avery, Joseph Sand and Dawn Tagawa, who will provide guidance as participants get to work.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Library, the Pottery Slam is free and supplies are provided.

The completed pieces will be fired and placed on display at the library for a few weeks, and then returned to their makers.

Avery teaches pottery at Randolph Community College and the Randolph Arts Guild. Her unique work can be found in shops and galleries in Asheboro and Greensboro.

Sand operates Joseph Sand Pottery in Randleman, and apprenticed with master potter Mark Hewitt.

Tagawa’s work, which can be purchased through Etsy, has been recognized in numerous area exhibitions and craft shows. She  believes good pottery should have depth, character and flow.

Build craft stick creations in library Maker Series

ASHEBORO – Take craft sticks, and add glue and imagination to see what you can create as the Asheboro Public Library’s Maker Series for kids ages 7-12 continues at 4 p.m. Thursday, January 28.

All supplies will be provides and librarians will be on hand to provide simple instructions. Space and supplies are limited, so call 318-6804 or visit the Children’s Room to sign up.

The Maker Series, which takes place during the last week of each month, is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Kids: test your mettle in Asheboro library games

ASHEBORO – Try your hand at a classic TV game show, challenge yourself to complete a scavenger hunt, and jump into a life-size board game in January at the Asheboro Public Library.

Go all out to “Beat the Clock” at 4 p.m. Tuesday, January 12. Compete in a series of 60-second challenges to make or do something with common household items.

Compete in the “Survivor Scavenger Hunt” at 2  p.m. Tuesday, January 19. Complete games and puzzles to move through a series of challenges to discover an ultimate treasure.

Play “Life-size Games” at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 20. Put yourself in a board game: become a life-size gamepiece to see if you can win.

Author Angel Matthews to debut Civil War novel at Asheboro library

ASHEBORO – Liberty resident and first-time author Angel Matthews will talk about her novel Charlotte Confederate Soldier at 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 19, at the Asheboro Public Library.

Matthews’ appearance, sponsored by the Friends of the Library, is free and the public is invited.

A longtime history buff who, with her husband Grant, attends Civil War re-enactments in period civilian garb, Matthews spent a year researching and writing. “All of the history in the book is true,” she says.

The novel concerns a young, newly-wed North Carolina woman whose opposition to slavery and search for her soldier husband leads to a series of adventures, including a stint in the Confederate cavalry.
